BA (Hons) Contemporary Fine Art

Sally Burch graduated from Central St Martins, London with a BA (Hons) in Contemporary Fine Art after initially studying Graphic Design at Brighton School of Art. She combines the skills from her graphic roots stirring the paint pot with ever evolving ideas from her fine art education.

She is inspired by the colour theorist, Johannes Itten and the ideas of the Bauhaus (the foundation of simplicity by creating aesthetic value through vibrant and contrasting colour). The founder of the Bauhaus, Walter Gropius, famously said; ‘colourful is my favourite colour’ it could also be Sally’s resounding mantra.

Sally has spent time drawing inspiration from her travels as well as from her home in North Essex, turning the visual cues into a personal abstract, artistic language made of geometric structuring, mark-making and patterning. The work is a reconstructed, collaged tableaux.

Beauty lies not in the real world but in geometry.
— Plato

Sally’s practice includes drawing, collage, photography and silk-screen printing.

The abstract paintings often start as sketches, photographs or mini free-form painterly sketches.
